Andros Island is the largest island in the Bahamas archipelago. Its area, roughly six thousand square kilometers (2,300 sq mi), makes it the 5h largest island in the West Indies. At 225 km (140 mi) long, Andros has the world's third largest barrier reef. The largest is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia at approximately 344,400 square kilometers. Andros is composed of three major islands: South Andros, North Andros, and Mangrove Cay. It is known by the Bahamians as the "Big Yard".
